Qidong is situated at the merging point of Yellow Sea, East China Sea and Yangtze River. Once a shoal before, it is now an oasis to herald the sunrise above the horizon earliest in the morning. Because of its special and outstanding geographical location, Qidong is only 50 kilometers away form Shanghai in direct distance. With a population of 1.16 million, the area of the whole city covers 1,157 square kilometers. With pleasant climate, abundant resources, wonderful scenery and hospitable people, it is also known as the Pearl on the Yangtze River.
As one of the first costal cities opened to the world, Qidong has been on the list of Top 100 economically powerful Counties (Cities) for three consecutive years. It also won many national titles, such as the First Batch of Well-off Counties, Top 100 Counties (Cities) in Technological Development, Star Counties (Cities), Sanitary Cities, etc. In a word, with spectacular river and sea features, Qidong can be represented by four distinctive aspects, these are discussed in detail below.
1. Hometown of Oceanic Economy
Qidong is well-known for its Lvsi port which is one of the six main national fishing ports. In Lvsi, there are more than 2000 seafood resources and products, such as jellyfish, laver, clam, butterfish, and yellow fish and so on. The amount of seafood in Lvsi port accounts for one third of the total in Jiangsu and half in Nantong. Qidong is also a natural base for production of Yangtze crab larvae and the largest cultivation base for natural clam.
Qidong also has distinctive tourism resources. A merging point of the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Yangtze River, Cape Yuantuo is the earliest place in China to see sunrise. Besides that, you can also enjoy some special and interesting relaxation and tourist programs such as beach sightseeing, seaside resorts, picking up clams, etc. These distinguishing features of Qidong tourism could be vividly described as: breathe fresh air, see the earliest sunrise, enjoy beach programs and listen to the sounds of tides.
2. Hometown of Power Tools
Qidong’s electric power tool industry started in the 1970s, rising strongly in the middle 1980s and came into a period of rapid development in the 1990s. According to the statistics, the number of people who operate this industry from Qidong accounts to more than 50,000, with a total trade fee of over 15 billion, which accounts for about 60% of the electric power tool industry in the whole country.
3. Hometown of Construction
Qidong was one of the first cities that were entitled as the Country of Construction by the Jiangsu government. Construction industry has a long history here, form ancient times witnessing many skilful craftsmen. In the 1990s Qidong’s Tao guilin founded the FuJi construction firm in Shanghai and contracted to build a 24-story International Hotel, which was the highest building at that time. From then, Qidong’s construction industry opened up a brand-new page. Nowadays, as many as 100,000 construction workers are spread out over 60 big or middle cities of 27 provinces (cities and autonomous regions) as well as more than 10 foreign countries.
Qidong building workers always maintain these strategic principles: take a project, do the major work, gain the recognition and open up a market. Because of this, Qidong’s construction industry has won the LuBan Prize, the highest construction engineering prize in China, nine times and has also won provincial-level quality prizes for more than 280 projects. These prizes include the White Orchid in Shanghai, Yangzi in Jiangsu, and the Great Wall in Beijing, among others.
4. Hometown of Education
Qidong is a remarkable place producing outstanding people; it is famous for its fundamental education. It has one national-level senior high school, eight provincial-level schools, and one national-level vocational school. The results of college entrance examinations show Qidong taking the first three positions on concessive 10 years in Jiangsu. Besides that, Qidong Middle School also has created many remarkable achievements. For example, about 20 students from only one class are enrolled by Peking University and Tsinghua University in successive years. And in International Olympic Student Science Competitions, Qidong students have won 12 gold medals and 2 silver medals so far, which is well-known by the whole world.
